5.2.6. Major National Players

Most countries have a national standardizing body responsible for representing the country's common position within the international forum. At the national level, these bodies also oversee or are responsible for other organizations responsible for national standards.

Canada's national standardizing body is the Standards Council of Canada (SCC). The SCC neither develops standards nor performs conformity assessments; rather it accredits the organizations that do. The SCC approves Canada's national standards and represents Canada in international standards forums.

Mirror Committees

In areas of national interest, national standardizing bodies create mirror committees to the ISO and IEC international committees. These mirror committees prepare national positions to be presented at the international level. For example, the CAC/ISO/TC 37 is the Canadian Advisory Committee to the ISO Technical Committee on Terminology and Other Language Resources.

At the government level, the Translation Bureau has the mandate to review and standardize the terminology used in the federal public service. To achieve this, the Translation Bureau is enhancing the standardization function of the Terminology Standardization Secretariat through its terminology committees, the Federal Terminology Council (FTC) and the Federal-Provincial-Territorial Terminology Council (FPTTC).

The Office québécois de la langue française is the French language agency set up by the government of the province of Quebec to oversee the francization program and the application of the Charter of the French Language (Law 101) in Quebec. In this capacity, it plays a standardizing role for the French language in Quebec.
