5.3.1. Introduction — Project Management in Terminology Standardization

Introduction

In this lesson, you will learn about planning and managing a terminology standardization project.

The aims of terminology project management are to facilitate the standardization process, to avoid the cost of reworking proposed or existing terminologies, and to produce terminologies that are coherent and meet their users' needs.

The project management process used in terminological standardization also applies to harmonization projects. The difference between standardization and harmonization is one of methodology rather than process. The product of a harmonization process is a vocabulary that is less prescriptive and relies more on recommendation than standardization.

Objectives

Upon completion of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Describe the major phases of project management for terminological standardization.
  • Identify the ideal composition of a terminology standardization project team.
  • Identify workflow management methods.
  • Identify those aspects of the project that are to be verified and reported on.
