6.1.3. search engine Sites

We will not list here all the search engines available on the Web, but rather point out some that could be of particular interest to terminologists.

Here are two sites that use the Web as a corpus:

WebCONC

http://www.niederlandistik.fu-berlin.de/cgi-bin/
web-conc.cgi?sprache=en&art=google

Search for terms in a corpus made up of texts found by Google that contain that term, with the results presented in the KWIC (Key Word in Context) format.

WebCorp

http://www.Webcorp.org.uk

Use the Web as a corpus. For each page found that contains the search term or pattern, a KWIC concordance is shown for all occurrences in that page. For each page, WebCorp also provides the number of tokens and types. You can also get a word frequency analysis for each page found, the results of which can be sorted by alphabetical order.

Metasearch Engines

Some sites will perform a search using multiple search engines at once, returning the results found by several engines to you only once in the list of hits. This eliminates the repetitive task of querying the same term several times, once for each search engine. The list below is not intended to be exhaustive; there are many other such engines.
