About this glossary

The Underwater archaeology glossary was developed in partnership with Parks Canada's underwater archaeology team. It deals with the terminology related to the discovery of the shipwrecks from Sir John Franklin's 1845 expedition, namely Her Majesty’s Ships (HMS) Erebus and Terror.

The glossary contains 584 concepts relating to marine environment, material culture, naval architecture, navigation and remote sensing, underwater archaeology, underwater diving and the military functions and ranks of the United Kingdom's Royal Navy.
