For defining operational semantics, LISP is probably the simplest and most complete language. It has the following features: selectors that allow selection of particular components of lists; constructors that allow construction of lists from their components; and predicates that allow testing whether a given structure is a list and whether two structures are equal.

Le sélecteur est souvent extérieur au système, les exemples étant alors choisis à la main dans un ordre favorable au bon apprentissage mais on peut imaginer que ce soit le système lui-même qui décide des exemples sur lesquels travailler en vue d'améliorer efficacement le programme.
