Après réflexion sur l'obstacle, le signal réfléchi que l'on appelle écho est capté par l'antenne émettrice, puis il est transmis à un récepteur qui, après détection et amplification, restitue une impulsion de durée t. Ainsi à chaque impulsion produite par l'émetteur correspond-il une impulsion de même forme qui apparaît avec un retard thèta. Il est alors possible de mesurer ce retard en rendant visibles ces deux tops sur l'écran d'un oscilloscope.
