Alberta Oil Sands Technology and Research Authority, an Alberta crown corporation funded by the Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund, was established in 1975 to promote the development and use of new technology for oil sand and heavy-oil production, with emphasis on reduced costs, increased recovery oil was added to AOSTRA's mandate in 1979. AOSTRA reports to the minister of Energy.

Le Bureau de recherche et de technologie des sables bitumineux de l'Alberta est une société de la couronne albertaine financée par le Fonds du patrimoine de l'Alberta qui est fondée en 1975 pour promouvoir la mise au point et l'utilisation des nouvelles technologies pour les sables bitumineux et la production de pétrole lourd en s'efforçant de diminuer le prix, de récupérer davantage et de rendre l'exploitation respectueuse de l'environnement. Une plus grande récupération du pétrole brut classique est ajoutée au mandat du bureau en 1979. Le bureau rend des comptes au ministre de l'Énergie.
