American Vegan Society (AVS) is a ... nonprofit organization that promotes, supports, and explores a compassionate, healthful, and sustainable lifestyle. The diet is entirely plant-sourced, varied and abundant. For ethical, health, environmental, and other reasons [the group] rejects all animal products in food, clothing and commodities. [They] also refuse to exploit animals for sport, entertainment, and experimentation. AVS is guided by the doctrines reverence for life and ahisma (nonharming and nonviolence) with taking positive action for social change. AVS provides community and friendship to those following and learning about this way of living.
