Ayant constaté l'intérêt marqué des étudiants à son concours de variétés, l'animateur socioculturel du Collège Ahuntsic, propose à l'automne 1979 aux institutions collégiales de Montréal un concours regroupant tous les arts de la scène. Le concours est basé sur l'autonomie de chacun des collèges qui s'engagent à organiser une finale locale afin de déterminer un représentant pour la finale régionale. Le 5 décembre 1979, la première finale locale de l'histoire se tient au collège Ahuntsic, suivi le 26 avril 1980, de la finale régionale où Martine St-Clair est sacrée grande gagnante. Cégeps en spectacle était né!
