Pour déterminer l'indice de saturation on peut utiliser soit l'adjectif "calcique" soit la locution "de la calcite". Le terme "calcique" signifie "relatif au calcium"; il est moins précis que "calcite" qui désigne le carbonate de calcium (CaCO3), forme la plus répandue du calcium dans la nature.
