The CUIO was formally established on August 4, 1977 and placed under the control of the office of the Secretary of State (Treasury Board Minute No. 751264). On 30 November 1978, responsibility for the CUIO was transferred to the Minister of Justice (P.C. 3652, 1 December 1978). In the autumn of 1984, the mandate of the Canadian Unity Information Office was terminated.
