By 1920, there were 166 primary elevator companies operating in Western Canada, and by 1933, the grain handling system reached its peak with 5,746 primary elevators. This period also saw the growth of farmer-owned or co-operative elevators. The Grain Growers Grain Company was formed in 1906.
