On les divise en 5 groupes : groupe de l'Est (assanais, bengali); Nord-Ouest (kasmiri); Ouest (rajasthani, panjabi, lahnda, gujarati ...); Sud-Ouest (marathi, cinghalais, ...); le groupe central (hindi) et ses dialectes orientaux (avadhi ...) et occidentaux (braj) l'urdu et le bihari.
