Se estableció en la Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Estaño, que se reunió en Ginebra del 20 de mayo al 21 de junio de 1975; el cual entró en vigor el 1 de julio de 1976 con un período de duración de cinco años. El Acuerdo se diseñó para prevenir fluctuaciones excesivas en el precio del estaño, ayudar a incrementar los ingresos de exportación de dicho producto y asegurar un abastecimiento adecuado, a precios justos para los consumidores y remunerativos para los productores.
