Il peut arriver que le dioxyde de soufre se transforme partiellement en trioxyde, donc en acide sulfurique. Pour que cette transformation puisse avoir lieu, il faut que deux conditions soient remplies : l'une concerne l'existence d'une grande concentration de SO2 mais aussi de particules diverses; l'autre est du domaine météorologique et correspond à la présence simultanée d'un brouillard, c'est-à-dire d'un aérosol de microgouttelettes d'eau. [...] On voit que c'est à la présence de ce smog, véritable aérosol d'acide sulfurique, que sont imputables les grands accidents de pollution, tel celui qui a endeuillé Londres en 1952.
