Un réacteur de modèle SNAP 10 A a été placé sur un satellite lancé depuis Vandenberg le 3 avril 1965. Son cœur était constitué par de l'uranium très enrichi et de l'hydrure de zirconium : le régime était contrôlé par un réflecteur de neutrons mobile, en béryllium, les Américains ayant choisi en guise de fluide caloporteur le «nak» (sodium + potassium) qui, liquide, était dirigé vers un convertisseur tronconique comportant 72 thermocouples; la partie extérieure de ce thermocouple servait de radiateur.
