In September 1994, new regulatory amendments under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act came into force to prohibit ocean disposal of radioactive waste and the ocean disposal of industrial waste. In 1995-96, the development of a National Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-Based Activities was initiated. It addresses land-base sources of marine pollution and coastal zone management (Environment Canada and Department of Fisheries and Oceans lead respectively).
