Approximately 20 American swift foxes will be moving to new homes on the Canadian prairie. The foxes, an endangered species in Canada, will be airlifted from Wyoming to Calgary, and then later released in southern Alberta and southern Saskatchewan as part of the National Recovery Plan for the Swift Fox. The Canadian population disappeared from the prairies for somme time during the 1930s. A population estimated at 150-200 foxes appears to have found homes in the short-grass prairie in southern Alberta and southern Saskatchewan. The ultimate aim of all participants in the reintroduction project is to see the swift fox become well enough established to permit its removal from the endangered species list.
