Le codage de base pour le son numérique est PCM («Pulse Code Modulation»), que l'on traduit assez rarement par MIC (Modulation par Impulsions Codées). Ce codage est une simple transformation des signaux analogiques en signaux numériques. Il n'inclut aucune compression sonore. C'est le type de codage utilisé par le CD-audio et les cartes sonores pour micro-ordinateurs. Les deux paramètres significatifs de ce codage sont la fréquence d'échantillonnage (en kHz) et la quantification (en bits). Le Tableau 5.4 montre les domaines d'application selon l'échantillonnage et la quantification.
