Founded in July 1935 to contest the federal election in October, the party gained 390,000 votes and almost 9 per cent of the popular vote, but only its leader, Henry Herbert Stevens, won a seat in the House of Commons. In 1939 he returned to the Conservative caucus; his party had fizzled out well before then.

Son propre gouvernement subit la défection du ministre du commerce, Henry Herbert Stevens, qui quitta les conservateurs pour fonder le Parti de la reconstruction du Canada lorsque Bennett refusa de mettre en œuvre les plans de Stevens pour une réforme économique drastique et l'interventionnisme économique gouvernemental pour gérer la crise.
