[La balance de Roberval] comporte un fléau à trois couteaux AMB; les plateaux reposent sur les couteaux extrêmes A et B, et leurs déplacements sont guidés par des tiges verticales AD et BC, reliées par un contre-fléau DNC mobile autour du point fixe N. Ce contre-fléau est caché par un socle en fonte. Les tiges AD et BC restent verticales, et les plateaux sont donc constamment horizontaux.
