Pour éviter que les robots ne dominent l'homme, l'écrivain américain de science-fiction, Isaac Asimov, a inventé dans son roman Robbie, publié en 1940, les trois célèbres lois de la robotique qui régissent les relations entre hommes et robots : 1ère Loi : un robot ne peut blesser un être humain ou, par son inaction, permettre qu'un être humain soit blessé. 2e Loi : un robot doit obéir aux ordres qui lui sont donnés par des êtres humains, sauf quand de tels ordres s'opposent à la première loi.
