Styrofoam is a trademarked name for a specific form of insulation manufactured by The Dow Chemical Company. "Styrofoam" is not synonymous with "polystyrene" but is widely used as such referring to /expanded polystyrene".

Polystyrène : Nom générique des polymères du styrène, couvrant un ensemble de matériaux ayant des aspects et des propriétés très différents. [...] La forme la plus connue est le polystyrène expansé qui forme les mousses de polystyrène. Sous sa forme non colorée, il est blanc. L'expansion, produite dans un moule, permet de fabriquer des objets de toutes petites dimensions, autant que des volumes de plusieurs mètres cubes. [...] Le polystyrène expansé peut être usiné, scié, raboté, fraisé, découpé au fil chaud, etc. [...] On emploie [les polystyrènes expansés] dans l'isolation thermique et l'emballage rigide pour objets fragiles ou denrées alimentaires.
