Bien que ce ne soit pas obligatoirement le cas, l'enfant décédé est généralement mineur et souvent même d'âge préscolaire. «Orphelin» vient du mot grec «orphanos», qui signifie «privé de père et de mère». Toutefois, dans beaucoup d'ouvrages linguistiques, on donne à l'adjectif «orphelin» un sens plus large.
