L'origine de cette dénomination est controversée, ordre de chevalerie anglais, créé par George I en 1725, prétendue résurrection d'un ancien ordre qu'Henri IV aurait créé en 1399. (...) 2 réformes : la première en 1815, (...) divisa l'ordre en 3 classes; la seconde, en 1847, ajouta des titres civils aux titres militaires. Depuis l'ordre comprend, outre le souverain, les princes du sang et quelques étrangers de marque, 82 chevaliers grand-croix, 253 chevaliers commandeurs et 1003 compagnons militaires et civils.
