When the British colony of India was granted independence in 1949, it was divided into India and Pakistan. Both countries lay claim to the state of Jammu and Kashmir, and went to war to obtain the territory by force. The purpose of UNMOGIP was to supervise in the disputed state, the ceasefire which ended hostilities between the two nations.

Au moment où l'Inde a obtenu son indépendance, en 1949, le territoire a été divisé entre l'Inde et le Pakistan. Les deux pays ont revendiqué l'État de Jammu et Cachemire. Ils se sont déclaré la guerre afin de s'emparer de ce territoire par la force. Le mandat de l'UNMOGIP consistait à superviser, dans l'État en litige, le respect du cessez-le-feu qui a mis fin aux hostilités entre les deux pays.
