The Zap flap ... is roughly similar to the plain split flap when it is fully retracted; but as the flap is opened, the hinge axis moves rearward to keep the trailing edges of the wing and the flap on a line perpendicular to the chord of the wing.

L'appareil reposait sur un train d'atterrissage tricycle et des volets hypersustentateurs rétractables sur toute l'envergure, volets appelés «volets Zap» du nom de l'ingénieur Edward Zap travaillant chez Northrop.

Ce genre de volet est similaire au volet Alfaro. Lors du déploiement, l'axe d'articulation est déporté vers l'arrière de telle sorte que le volet et le bord de fuite se situent sur une ligne perpendiculaire par rapport à la corde de l'aile.
