Oxydation des révélateurs par l'oxygène de l'air. Les révélateurs s'oxydent, même lorsqu'ils ne sont pas employés. Au cours du développement, l'oxydation aérienne s'ajoute à l'oxydation du bromure d'argent. Il se produit du sulfate de sodium et d'autres dérivés qui donnent au révélateur une coloration brune. Tout contact avec l'air, soit en surface dans une cuvette, soit par injection dans les cuves de développement, est une cause d'oxydation. L'oxydation aérienne voile les émulsions et abaisse le gamma.
