L'entreposage refroidi à l'air est le mode d'entreposage réalisé en France, il est constitué d'une fosse enterrée bétonnée, d'une dizaine de mètres de profondeur et de puits de stockage verticaux dans lesquels les conteneurs sont empilés. L'air de refroidissement circule dans l'espace annulaire réservé entre les conteneurs et la paroi interne des puits. Suivant la température maximale admise pour l'air d'évacuation, la conception peut être légèrement différente.
