Des structures comme Aparts (Association pour les appartements de relais thérapeutique et social) et le fonds interassociatif SSL (Sida solidarité logement) interviennent plus spécifiquement pour répondre aux problèmes urgents d'hébergement. Comme les CHRS (Centres d'hébergement et de réadaptation sociale) qui peuvent être sollicités mais qui ne sont pas prévus pour accueillir les personnes malades, ces structures ont aussi pour objectif de réinsérer socialement les individus. Elles servent de relais institutionnel, en attendant la mise en œuvre, souvent longue, des dispositifs sociaux (allocation logement, allocation adulte handicapé - AAH, pension d'invalidité). Ce rôle de réinsertion est d'autant plus crucial que les malades sont souvent marginalisés.
