Millennium's five-year strategic alliance with Wyeth-Ayerst to discover and develop antibacterial drugs for human use began in December 1996 at ChemGenics Pharmaceuticals Inc., which was acquired by Millennium in February 1997. The partnership is focused on the identification of small molecule targets and suitable drug lead candidates.

Le but de [...] de l'industrie bactérienne est de développer des antibiotiques et vaccins innovants mais, aussi, à plus long terme, des classes d'agents antibactériens complètement nouvelles permettant de contourner les phénomènes de résistance. En effet, au lieu de tuer les bactéries comme le font les antibiotiques, ces nouveaux médicaments devraient atténuer le pouvoir pathogène des bactéries en ciblant leur facteur de virulence ou en jouant sur les molécules de communication intercellulaire.
