Au sens strict, le terme carcinoïde désigne des tumeurs développées à partir de la cellule entérochromaffine (EC), caractérisée [...] au plan histochimique par son argentaffinité (fixation directe des sels d'argent) [...] Mais toutes les tumeurs de morphologie carcinoïdienne ne sont pas des tumeurs à cellules EC : on distinguait classiquement les carcinoïdes argentaffines, les carcinoïdes argyrophiles non argentaffines (ne fixant l'argent qu'après adjonction d'un réducteur) et les carcinoïdes non réactifs. Seuls les premiers sont à cellule EC.
