To meet the needs of robotics, manufacturers are producing not only standard sensors, such as strain gauges, but also "artificial skin" made out of piezoelectric or piezoresistive material, which turns a sensed pressure into an electrical current.

Artificial skin uses sensors to help prosthetics and robotic limbs process sensations and perform tasks with dexterity. ... Researchers want to create artificial skin that responds to multiple stimuli the way real skin does, creating more functionality.

A skin or casing fabricated of synthetic material into which sausage is stuffed.

The use of artificial sausage casings made of cellulose, collagen, textile fibres or plastics is firmly established in meat processing. The advantages of artificial casings are their attractive designs, easy stocking and uniform calibre.

OBS

The casing may be inedible (for example, bologna casing) or edible (for example, breakfast link casing).
