Sulphate in precipitation may result from entrainment of particulate SO4 or from absorption and solution of SO2 or H2S with subsequent oxidation to SO4. About 75 percent of the atmospheric sulphur over Northern Europe originates from human activity.

Le soufre atmosphérique est présent sous forme de composés qui interviennent en phase gazeuse, liquide ou solide. Les principaux composés gazeux sont SO2,H2S. A ceux-ci viennent s'ajouter de faibles quantités de composés minéraux ou organiques (SF6,(CH3)2S,CS2 etc.( ainsi que des produits de réactions intermédiaires.

OBS

Le soufre se rencontre surtout sous forme d'anhydride sulfureux dans l'atmosphère; il arrive donc souvent qu'une relation de synonymie s'établisse entre le soufre et ce composé du soufre.
