CONT

In a batch process a vessel is filled with starting materials, often including the micro-organisms themselves. The biochemical conversion takes place in the vessel over a period that can range from a few hours to several days. Ultimately the vessel is emptied, the product is purified and a new batch is started.... The batch process can be likened to the operation of a steel mill....

OBS

The vast majority of enzyme purifications rely on batch processes. However, the potential of continuous systems is high and should be considered.

CONT

CONT

Product concentration can be maximized by decreasing the flow rate or increasing the activity and concentration of the catalyst. In the traditional fermentation industry - exemplified by antibiotic, amino acid, and organic acid production - batch and fed-batch processes are commonly used, in part because they allow high product concentrations to accumulate by letting the flow rate approach zero.
