Cette zone de vases, appelée zone bathyale, se place à des distances très variables du rivage, selon la pente générale du plateau et la consistance des apports terrigènes. Limitée en gros aux profondeurs de 200 à 2 000 m, la zone bathyale couvre près de 20 % de la surface du fond des mers.
