À l'inverse des bio-indicateurs, les bioaccumulateurs sont des plantes résistantes, capables d'absorber et d'accumuler d'importantes quantités de contaminants sans que cela ne perturbe leur métabolisme. L'analyse chimique permet de déterminer la nature et la concentration des substances stockées dans les tissus. Ce qui permet d'évaluer le niveau de pollution. Exemple de bioaccumulateur : le «ray grass», graminée prairiale utilisée pour la détection des métaux lourds.
