Biological Exposure Indices (BEIs) represent warning levels of biological response to the chemical, or warning levels of the chemical or its metabolic product(s) in tissues, fluids, or exhaled air of exposed workers, regardless of whether the chemical was inhaled, ingested, or absorbed via skin. Introduction of the BEI is a step in the evolution of the concept of TLVs. ... TLVs are a measure of the composition of the external environment surrounding the worker.
