Hail ... challenging unknown boat.

Between sunrise and sunset, any boat approaching the ship shall be challenged by the gangway staff to determine who is in the boat and the boat's intentions. When the boat is in hailing distance, the hail "boat ahoy" is given.

At night, you cannot see who is in the boat ... to get around this difficulty, a code of replies to the hail, "BOAT AHOY," has been devised.
