En aciérie, [le convertisseur] a la forme d'une grosse cornue à col court, mobile autour d'un axe horizontal. Il est en tôle d'acier garnie intérieurement soit d'un revêtement acide (convertisseur Bessemer), soit d'un revêtement basique (convertisseur Thomas). Le fond est constitué par une plaque réfractaire percée de nombreuses tuyères en relation avec une boîte à vent qui amène l'air sous pression.
