A device for finding a horizontal line or plane by means of a bubble in a nonfreezing liquid (as alcohol or ether) that shows adjustment to the horizontal by movement of the bubble to the center of a glass tube that is slightly bowed up from the horizontal longitudinally.

(Celle-ci demeure toujours en équilibre à la partie la plus élevée du tube, de manière que la ligne joignant ses extrémités soit horizontale. Deux repères indiquent la position de la bulle dans ce cas. Dans certains niveau, une vis permet le réglage. Le niveau à bulle a été inventé au XVIIe s., perfectionné par la suite. On l'adapte souvent à des instruments de physique, afin de rendre vertical un axe de rotation.)
