Les granites calco-alcalins, symptomatiques des croûtes continentales (le rouge agressif des cartes géologiques synthétiques) cristallisent, depuis les 2,5 milliards d'années au moins que fonctionnerait la tectonique des plaques [...], dans le tréfonds des zones de subduction. Ils constituent l'aboutissement d'une physico-chimie complexe des bains silicatés, la différenciation des magmas, dont le point de départ est la fusion partielle hydratée des péridotites de la lithosphère, parfois de la base de la croûte continentale, au-dessus du plan de subduction.
