On prépare le ciment à partir de marne (principalement de la craie, CaCO3) et à partir d'une matière argileuse ou limoneuse (qui comprend des composés du silicium et de l'aluminium avec de l'oxygène). On y ajoute également une matière contenant de l'oxyde de fer. Après mélange, broyage et séchage, on le chauffe à une température très élevée, si bien que l'on obtient principalement du silicate de calcium (CaSiO3) et de l'aluminate de calcium {Ca3(AlO3)2}.
