On bullets, its uses include crimping, identification, lubrication (grease/lubrification groove), retaining of water proofing, limiting expansion, and lessening bullet resistance to rifling. On cartridge cases, its uses include crimping, limiting depth seating of bullet, identification and acting as extractor groove.
