La perte d'un état s'appelait : diminution de tête (capitis deminutio) qui, comme l'état lui-même était triple : la grande diminution de tête (capitis deminutio maxima) - s'opérait par la perte de la liberté, qui naturellement entraînait celle des deux autres états (perte du droit de cité, perte du statut de famille).
