Subject field(s)
  • Road Design
DEF

The area between the roadway edge of pavement and the base (toe) of a rock cut slope used to restrict rockfalls from [reaching] the roadway.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Conception des voies de circulation
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
DEF

The area draining naturally to a water course or to a given point. [Definition standardized by ISO.]

CONT

Field teams at the Columbia Icefield and in the Maligne Lake drainage basin reported whumpfing of the snowpack at treeline and in the alpine. [Example approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.]

OBS

The term "drainage" refers to a specific valley. We commonly use watershed to describe locations in the landscape and so the conditions can vary between drainages (which means between valleys). Drainage refers to the "river" which all the water of that valley drains into. [Reference: Avalanche Specialist, Parks Canada.]

OBS

In North America, the term watershed is often used instead of catchment area. In the UK, watershed means the line separating two adjacent catchments.

OBS

drainage basin: term used by Parks Canada.

OBS

catchment area; catchment basin; gathering ground: terms standardized by ISO.

OBS

drainage basin; drainage: terms officially approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.

Les bassins sont séparés par des lignes de partage des eaux.

Subject field(s)
  • Drainage and Irrigation (Agric.)
  • Geochemistry
CONT

In the case of uranium-bearing calcrete, which normally contains vanadates, or phoscrete, the uranium probably is derived in large catchment areas from a separate source from that for the vanadium and phosphate.

OBS

Influence of catchment basin area on the sediment geochemistry appears to be minimal. There are weak, yet statistically significant, correlations of catchment area with loss on ignition, manganese, fluoride, iron, chromium and vanadium.

  • Géochimie
CONT

Dans le cas des croûtes calcaires uranifères qui contiennent normalement des vanadates, ou des croûtes phosphatées, l'uranium s'est probablement accumulé dans de grandes zones de captage à partir d'une source distincte de celle du vanadium et du phosphate.
