A person who plans, directs and coordinates the police operations of a division or district and, through subordinates, the activities of branches, sections, detachments and units of a police force under his or her supervision.

OBS

Police departments vary so widely in their structural organization that it is virtually impossible to standardize the terminology of titles and ranks. However, the above terms, especially "chief of police," are in reasonably wide use throughout the country.
