Le refroidissement radiatif des nuages a lieu surtout à leur partie supérieure, où il s'explique de la même façon que le refroidissement nocturne du sol (...) Il est vrai qu'en général la surface inférieure des nuages est l'objet d'un échauffement net par rayonnement, en raison du fait que l'émission de cette surface est plus faible que le rayonnement ascendant absorbé, émis à des températures plus élevées; mais c'est normalement le refroidissement de la surface supérieure qui l'emporte, et qui se communique ensuite par turbulence à l'ensemble de la troposphère.
