Muscular rigidity is usually readily evident on passive movement of a limb. Passive movement may demonstrate a smooth resistance (like trying to bend a lead pipe--lead-pipe rigidity), sometimes with superimposed ratchet-like jerks (cogwheel phenomenon).

Sur le plan clinique, elle donne l'impression d'une résistance par à-coups successifs (phénomène de la «roue dentée») ou d'une résistance cireuse («en tuyau de plomb») au mouvement, lorsqu'on déplace passivement le membre.
