Les navires en acier modifient fortement le champ magnétique terrestre en intensité et en direction, provoquant ainsi des déviations importantes qui rendent parfois le compas inutilisable à certains caps; on annule l'influence des fers du navire à l'aide de compensateurs, placés judicieusement dans le voisinage du compas. Le magnétisme permanent est annulé par des aimants, et le magnétisme passager par des fers doux verticaux (boules et flinders).
